Dearest Princess Amelia, I know that you have been learning about the Great Fire of London and that you have been to a firework display and as Saturday is Bonfire Night. I also want to say very well done for winning the pumpkin competion with your 1666 pumpkin!

I thought I would share some fire related songs with you. Here is a fire top ten, I hope that you enjoy them.

Clash210513Dearest Princess Amelia I have been to see many hundreds of bands and singers playing live and as you get older I will probably bore you with stories about many of them. But there are some acts that I never managed to see in a live concert. One of those is a band that are probably my favourite ever British band. They were called the Clash and they had their first hits in the late 1970s. As a simple way of introducing them to you I thought that I’d select three songs, the last of which is really a cover version of one of their songs by a group of children. The songs are; “Rock The Casbah“, “London Calling” and “Career Opportunities”. I hope that you manage to get Mummy and Daddy and the whole population of Godderwil dancing to the first one.

Dearest Princess Amelia I do hope that you have recovered from the fright that my fancy dress face paint gave you at your Daddy’s 50th Jubilee birthday shindig in Godderwil a few weeks ago. I certainly didn’t mean to scare you.

It’s nearly the end of June and I haven’t given you a monthly blog post yet, so here it is. This time I would like to introduce you to one of my favourite bands of all time. They have been the inspiration for many bands and were at the forefront of the rise of punk music. They are the brothers that aren’t really brothers, they are cartoon punks, they are the granddaddies of New York punk, they are Joey, Johnny, Tommy and Dee Dee, they are da Brudda’s, they are the RAMONES!!!!!!!

When they formed in New York in 1974 and at some point decided to take different names but with the same surname. They chose Ramone because Paul McCartney once used the name Paul Ramon to hide his real identity. The bands real names are;

Joey = Jeffry Hyman

Johnny = John Cummings

Tommy = Thomas Erdelyi

Dee Dee = Douglas Colvin

A number of people have become a Ramone for a while, particularly drummers. One of the interesting drummers that played with the band was known as Elvis Ramone, but really he was Clem Burke the drummer from Blondie.

The band played 2,263 gigs over 22 years ending with a farewell show at the Lollapalooza Festival in the USA in 1996. Their songs are generally very fast and very short and often feature a 1, 2, 3, 4 count in at the start. They even have a catch phrase wich comes from their song “Pinhead”. That phrase is ‘Gabba Gabba Hey‘ which in turn comes from the rather strange and possibly scary 1932 movie called ‘Freaks‘. the line in the film was ‘gooble, gobble, we accept her, we accept her, one of us, one of us’ . The band have also appeared on the Simpsons.

Sadly the three founder members; Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee have now all passed away so we will never be able to see them play live again. But they have left behind some fantastic songs. You can enjoy a few of them now. I think you should sing along and dance and I think you should call yourself Amelia Ramone for the day.
