With Just A Hint Of Amelia

Amelia, I can’t believe that it has been three years since the last post on your With Just A Hint Of Amelia blog. I will try to do better in future 🙂 I thought I would bring it back for you birthday with a little view of some of the most influential and talented women in music. I could have made a much bigger list, but maybe I can make this a series and do more in the future!

KATE BUSH

First up is one of my favourite artists, Kate Bush. Why is she on this list? Well because she is incredibly talented, she has influenced many other artists and she has mostly succeeded on her own terms.

BJORK

Next it is the turn of Björk or to give her full name Björk Guðmundsdóttir. She is an Icelandic maverick who sounds like no one else on the planet and like Kate Bush she has done things her own way!

BEYONCE

Beyoncé is one of the smartest women in music, she has worked incredibly hard to become such an influence on young women and on black culture. She is also a fierce advocate of human rights.

P!NK

I love P!nk, do you like how she spells her name? She stands up for the underprivileged in a similar way to Beyoncé.

TAYLOR SWIFT

Taylor Swift has not been around quite as long as the other women in the list. But what I love about her is that she seems to have no fear and has been powerfully taking on the music industry for the past few years, mostly successfully.

TAYLOR & BEYONCE

I have been very lucky having seen Kate Bush, Björk and P!nk play live 🙂 I hope that you enjoy listening to a song from each of them and I would love to know which is your favourite and whether you can think of any other influential women in music!

P!nk sings this with her daughter Willow Sage Hart. She is a similar age to you Amelia, she will be 10 in June 🙂

Dearest Princess Amelia it has been far too long since I posted on your blog. So as I am currently in America, in New York City (and 5 hours behind you) I thought I would give you some songs about this great city. I believe it might be a city that has more songs about it than most other cities too. I hope that you like the songs and I reckon that one day when you are older you will visit here and I think you will love it! It is definitely one of my favourite cities now. But before the songs how about a few facts about New York City which many locals call the big Apple or Gotham?

  • The Statue of Liberty, a gift from the people of France, arrived to the U.S. in 214 crates. It was assembled and then unveiled in New York Harbour in 1886.
  • The name New York originated in 1664 when King Charles II of England, granted the region to his brother who was the Duke of York and Albany.
  • The Brooklyn Bridge in New York City is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. It opened in 1883 it cost $15.5 million to build, it measures 5,989 feet long (1825m) and at the time was longest suspension bridge in the world.
  • Native Americans came to the area now called New York about 5,000 years ago. Thousands of years later, their descendants included Native American tribes such as the Mohawk, Cayuga, Oneida, and Seneca.
  • Grand Central Terminal was opened in 1871 and became the busiest train station in the country. It is allegedly the biggest rail terminus in the world, but please don’t call it a station, New Yorkers don’t like that!

Dearest Princess Amelia, I am sorry for not posting on your blog for quite a while. But I thought that I would give you a special space blog this time. Do you remember that we spoke about the different planets when we met at the charity dog walk, that day that you helped Ziggy through here first ever agility course? I thought about that chat and chose to post about our solar system.

Our solar system has eight planets (there used to be nine, but it was decided that Pluto was too small); Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system and it is also the hottest as it is closest to the sun. It has no natural satellites.

Venus is the second planet from the sun and it is slightly smaller and much drier than Earth. It has no natural satellites

Earth is the third planet from the sun and we live here. As far as we know it is the only planet in the solar system with life. We have one natural satellite which we call the moon.

Mars is the fourth planet from the sun and is often called the red planet. It is smaller than Earth and Venus. There is a volcano on Mars called Olympus Mons which is more than twice as tall as Earth’s Mount Everest. Mars has two natural satellites called Deimos and Phobos.

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun and the largest. It has at least 69 natural satellites the largest of which are Ganymede, Callisto, Io, and Europa. Ganymede is bigger than the planet Venus.

Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun and has some very distinctive rings which circle it. The rings are made of small ice and rock particles. Saturn has at least 62 natural satellites, these include Titan, the second largest moon in the solar system.

Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun and is the lightest of all eight. It has at least 27 natural satellites the largest of which are Titania, Oberon, Umbriel, Ariel, and Miranda. Uranus unlike any of the other seven planets orbits the sun on its side.

Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun and is slightly smaller than Uranus. It has at least 14 natural satellites, the largets of which is Triton. There are geysers of liquid nitrogen on Triton.

Now let’s listen to a few songs that mention many of the planets and the sun! You can even dance to some of them :-). Oh and please say sorry to Mummy and Daddy for the Venga Boys song!

Dearest Princess Amelia, I must apologise for being a little lazy with posts to your blog, the last one was more than three months ago. So I thought that I would start it back up with a nonsense lyric that I love. The singer is Barry Mann and the song is all about the bomp bah bomp bah bomp and it is called “Who Put The Bomp”. I hope that you and all the people in Goddarwil enjoy it and find the time to dance to it!

Dearest Princess Amelia, I know that you have been learning about the Great Fire of London and that you have been to a firework display and as Saturday is Bonfire Night. I also want to say very well done for winning the pumpkin competion with your 1666 pumpkin!

I thought I would share some fire related songs with you. Here is a fire top ten, I hope that you enjoy them.

Dearest Princess Amelia, your Mummy and Daddy told me a few days ago that you had told them what your three favourite words are. They said that love, happy and hope are your favourite words. Well I believe that is a fantastic set of words to have as favourites and if you don’t mind I would like to borrow them and make them my favourites as well. If you always consider love, happiness and hope in everything that you do then I believe that you will have a wonderful life and you will make life better for everyone that you come into contact with too. To me you are and will always be a very loving, very happy girl who has a heart full of hope. As your Odd Father I have to say please don’t ever stop being that girl, even when you are much older! Anyway I thought that I would try to sum up those three words of yours in three songs.

tumblr_m49slrKbBa1rwrcuso1_500The first is all about love and it tells you that love is all you need. Well that is partly true, but I think you know that what you also need is happiness and hope. So to make you feel a little happy there is a fabulous song called, simply, “Happy”. Finally I thought for a long while about the most hopeful song that I know and it came down to a simple choice in the end. It is one of my favourite ever songs from one of my very favourite singers it is Johnny Nash with “I Can See Clearly Now”. I hope that you enjoy these three songs and that maybe they stay with you, particularly in times when maybe you might feel a little bit sad. Just remember that sometimes it is OK to feel like that but never forget that there is always hope and that you will always be loved.

Dearest Princess Amelia I’m sorry it has been so long since I posted on your blog. Someone from the Godderwil Royal Family has told me that you now have a cat called Pudding. Now that gave me an idea. I thought I would make a post for you that had a few cat and cat related songs on it. I hope that you enjoy them. Tell me which is your favourite.

Poor little kitten Joey was only a few weeks old when his mother was killed while crossing a road near Exeter in Devon. Happily for Joey he was successfully introduced to a new mum after being taken to the Axhayes cat adoption centre. However, his new mother already has three kittens of her own, which are 6-weeks older than Joey and three times as big. But, despite the differences in size and age, Joey has been welcomed into the feline family and now has big brother Chesney to lend him a helping paw. Both Joey and Chesney are currently shopping around for a new home, though Joey will have to wait a few weeks before he is old enough to leave his new mum.

Dearest Princess Amelia. Your Daddy told me that you left a sign outside your room this week asking him and Mummy to stay out. I hope that maybe you were making presents for them which is why you wanted the door shut. Is that true?

Anyway I thought that after making that sign you might like some songs about doors that are shut 🙂

I hope that you enjoy them.

Dearest Princess Amelia, one day you might find a singer, musician, artist, writer or perhaps a film star that you really, really like. You may never even get to meet them but that person will mean very much to you, not as much as your Mummy, Daddy and brothers and sisters and your friends. But they will mean a lot to you. Not everyone finds someone like that but I did.

David Bowie performing at the Hammersmith Apollo

Many years ago in 1972 when I was just 13 I saw David Bowie on television singing a song called “Starman“. From that day I became a fan of Mr Bowie and even after all that time I still am. But on Monday myself and all the thousands of people across the world who like David Bowie had some very bad news. He went to heaven on Monday although he was only 69. Even when you’re old, like me, it’s ok to cry sometimes.

I hope that you do find an artist that means as much to you as David Bowie does to me. But in the meantime here a few of my favourite David Bowie songs for you to enjoy.
